Health Care for All--Santa Cruz Chapter

Why Single-Payer?

bullet

The US is the only industrialized nation that does not provide health care for all its citizens.

bullet

It's far more expensive to deny health coverage to 45 million Americans than it would be to give excellent coverage to everyone.

bullet

Healthcare costs are increasingly unaffordable for businesses, workers, and families alike.

bullet

No one should ever have to choose between their finances and their health.

bullet

Our medical system is dictated by insurance corporations that are not as nearly as concerned about health as they are about profits.

bullet

Other health care "reforms" only address the symptoms without addressing the core problems that underlie our health care system.

Would you live in a community like this?

bullet

Police protection for only those who could afford it?

bullet

Fire protection for only those who could afford it?

bullet

Public schools for only those who could afford it?

Why then do we have health care for only those who can afford it? The seriously ill are least able to keep working to maintain their insurance and pay their bills.

What is a Single-Payer System?

bullet

Everyone is covered—the young and the old, the working and the unemployed, the healthy and the sick, the rich and the poor.

bullet

There are no financial barriers to getting medical care.

bullet

No one is denied coverage, whether because of age, income, or "pre-existing" conditions.

bullet

Doctors and hospitals send claims to one streamlined, publicly accountable  insurance commission, which reimburses them fairly.

bullet

Funding is similar to Social Security; we each contribute a little, so we all share in having secure insurance.

bullet

No co-payments and no deductibles. Whatever is medically necessary is covered 100%.

bullet

Single-payer systems are already the standard in the rest of the industrialized world.
